What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters. It is the most scientific and widely used screening index to estimate body fat indirectly. Since it only requires height and weight and no specialized equipment, medical institutions globally utilize it as a basic screening tool to identify health risks and determine potential metabolic syndromes.
Key Limitations of BMI & How to Overcome Them
Although BMI is highly convenient, it has notable limitations. First, it does not distinguish between fat and muscle. Highly active athletes or bodybuilders with substantial muscle mass can be falsely diagnosed as overweight or obese, even if their body fat ratio is extremely low. Second, it doesn’t indicate the distribution of fat (such as visceral vs. subcutaneous). This leads to misclassification of "skinny fat" individuals who possess excessive abdominal fat despite normal overall weight.
